We Are Scientists, the long-running indie rock band from New York, will release their ninth album, Qualifying Miles, on July 18, 2025. The group, made up of Keith Murray and Chris Cain, has been making music together for over 20 years. They are known for their catchy guitar-driven songs, clever lyrics, and energetic live shows.
This new album is coming out on Grönland Records, a label based in Germany that has helped grow the band’s fanbase in Europe. For the first time in many years, one label will handle the album worldwide. Chris says they’re not worried — they trust Grönland completely.
Qualifying Miles features a simple, raw sound. Instead of using lots of studio tricks, the band focused on playing together in a room, just like they did when they were younger. The songs have a strong 1990s guitar rock feel, the kind of music they grew up listening to. Keith says they didn’t plan for the songs to have a theme, but many of them ended up being about memory, growing older, and feelings of loss.
Some of the new song titles include “Dead Letters,” “Don’t Change,” “What You Want Is Gone,” and lead single “Please Don’t Say It,” which came out on April 11. Keith says that when Chris heard that track, he knew right away it should be a single.
We Are Scientists first became well-known with their 2005 album With Love and Squalor, which included hits like “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt” and “It’s a Hit.” Since then, they’ve continued to grow and change while keeping their signature sound.
The band will tour Europe and the UK starting in April, with North American dates to follow. Even after two decades, We Are Scientists still find new ways to keep things fresh, mixing thoughtful ideas with powerful, emotional indie rock.
