TIM KILE: "THESE THINGS ARE BEING GATHERED FOR THE FIRE" REVIEW

I’ve gotten familiar with Tim Kile over the last few singles that I’ve also reviewed for BMN. Everything remains true about the era this feels like and that’s 2005-2012. If you like Band Of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab For Cutie, Sea Wolf, Beirut, The Shins and bands like that I think you are going to find stuff on this album that you really like. Tim’s claim to fame is he is a founding member of Arcade Fire and Wild Light. The track “My Medicine” instantly jars my memory as I reviewed it not too long ago and it still is great and shoots to the top of my list as one of those songs I’m going to save on Spotify to be on my “Liked Songs” list. The album has a great ebb and flow to it and doesn’t feel repetitive at all. Moments like the first big rock chord strikes in songs like “Jeremaid” are a nice contrast to the next track “Holy Ghost” which starts off with almost a Hollies-ish riff and has a great dynamic to it. It plays with build ups and sparseness on the verses but brings it back for a catchy indie rock chorus and catchy bridge. It’s great to hear Tim go from that to almost an indie folk number in “Family Tree”. Overall a very solid album that references everything from the indie realm of the last 40 years. It never feels for a moment though that this is anything but a Tim Kile record, he lays a nice foundation for what he is all about musically and what the aesthetic going forward will be. It feels as though it has a wide array of styles and something for all music fans. I would say overall though if you loved the previously mentioned bands you are definitely going to find something you love about Tim Kile’s music.
