Providence slowcore band The Pines of Rome have released their new album, When You Are As Full As The Moon, available now through Solid Brass Records. Alongside the album, the group has shared the single “Kali’s Tongue,” offering listeners another entry point into the band's expansive and emotionally rich sound.
Originally formed in 1999, The Pines of Rome released their debut album before stepping away for nearly two decades. After returning in 2023 with The Unstruck Bell, the band continued building on its distinct blend of slowcore, indie rock, and Cosmic American Music.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Karate, Rex, Seam, Codeine, and Songs: Ohia, The Pines of Rome create music that moves at a deliberate pace while embracing powerful dynamics and layered instrumentation. Their songs often balance quiet introspection with towering walls of sound.
Recorded and mixed by Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets in nearby Pawtucket, Rhode Island, When You Are As Full As The Moon explores themes of grief, resilience, and personal growth. The album begins with reflections on the loss of a parent and closes with the understanding that past mistakes can sometimes lead to unexpected wisdom.
The album's title is inspired by a poem by the Zen Buddhist nun Theri Punna, centering on the idea of finding light and meaning during difficult times. That spirit runs throughout the seven-track release, which examines how people move through darkness while searching for hope.
“Kali’s Tongue” captures the album's emotional depth and dynamic range. The track pairs patient melodies with swelling instrumentation, highlighting the band's ability to create tension and release without sacrificing intimacy.
Over the years, The Pines of Rome have shared stages with artists including Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co., Richard Buckner, Bonnie Prince Billy, The Promise Ring, Jets To Brazil, and Bright Eyes.
With When You Are As Full As The Moon, The Pines of Rome continue their creative resurgence, delivering a thoughtful and immersive record that reflects both their long history and renewed sense of purpose.
