New Jersey rock band The Melancholy Kings return with their sophomore album Her Favorite Disguise, now available digitally through Magic Door Record Label. The album follows their 2019 self-titled debut and leans fully into a sound shaped by ’80s alternative rock, college radio jangle, and melodic guitar-driven songwriting. It is raw but focused, built on strong hooks, steady grooves, and reflective lyrics.
The album is produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, New Jersey. The production keeps things clear and direct, allowing the songs to breathe without losing energy. Guitars ring brightly, basslines move with purpose, and the drums keep a relaxed but driving pulse. The record balances grit and melody, staying loose while never drifting apart.
At the core of The Melancholy Kings are singer and guitarist Mike Potenza and bassist Scott Selig. The two connected after years spent in corporate jobs, unaware that they shared similar roots in the ’90s and early 2000s New York indie scene. Recommitting to music, they formed a full lineup with drummer Paul Andrew and guitarist Peter Horvath, creating a band that sounds seasoned rather than nostalgic.
Her Favorite Disguise reflects life shaped by cities, routines, and quiet discontent. The songs often focus on movement, memory, and emotional distance, pulling from experiences in New York City and New Jersey. The writing feels observational and grounded, pairing personal moments with broader social themes. Earlier singles like “Bitcoin Elegy” and “Victoria” highlight this balance, combining modern subject matter with classic jangle-rock tones.
The album also features a range of guest musicians who add texture without crowding the songs. Trumpet, cello, accordion, additional vocals, and percussion appear throughout the record, widening its sonic range while keeping the band’s core sound intact.
