THE HOMELESS GOSPEL CHOIR: THIS IS A PROTEST SONG

The first audible line of the first musical track is saying something about “Fuck Donald Trump” so I’m pretty much sold on the vibe and the message. The recording is a little rough on track 2, it’s a live show over in the UK and it sounds like it was recorded from somewhere out in the crowd and not directly off of a soundboard, which is fine. By track two it sounds like more of an intimate crowd but again I agree with the message when the singer exclaims how much Sublime sucks as he rattles off a list of shit he hates and shit he loves. The energy each song is delivered with makes it easy to forget about some of the production issues. It’s clear to hear some influences like The Front Bottoms, The Weakerthans, and even a little bit of Atom And His Package. It’s funny, it’s emotionally charged and the kind of thing that makes you want to check this out live. In every clip the audience sounds like they are having the most fun they’ve ever had at a show. The cadence and humor reminds me of a punk rock version of Garfunkel and Oates (the band not the actual dudes).  In a weird way I thought this was definitely a Jersey act because I can name at least 3 or 4 singers who sound really similar over the years from the Jersey scene, that and the attitude seems to have the Jersey snarl. The autobiographical and live aspect make this a perfect time capsule capturing an artist that is making many audiences very happy. This is one of those projects where the listeners imagination has to fill in some of the gaps like listening to Daniel Johnston - the soul and energy behind the music is what you are going to love about this.
