Led by multi-instrumentalist Brian Willey, the record continues the project's blend of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, indie, and drone while introducing a more personal and guitar-driven direction.
"From A Different Place" stands out as one of the album's most immediate songs. Built around melodic guitar lines and a more traditional song structure, the track reflects on the cumulative impact of everyday choices, both personal and societal. While it retains the atmospheric textures that have long defined The Black Drumset, it also embraces a more direct emotional approach, allowing the songwriting to take center stage.
Originally founded in Austin in 2009, The Black Drumset has earned a reputation for creating immersive, rhythm-focused music that balances hypnotic percussion, expansive synths, and cinematic soundscapes. Live performances often feature two drummers, reinforcing the project's fascination with layered rhythms and driving momentum.
Written and recorded between 2021 and 2025, Friends In Dark Places began while Willey was living in Tucson, Arizona, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic before being completed after his return to Austin. Those years of isolation and uncertainty shaped the record's emotional direction, resulting in lyrics that feel more intimate and reflective than previous releases.
Across seven tracks, the album preserves the heavy synth drones and textured instrumentation heard on earlier records while placing greater emphasis on guitars, vocals, and personal storytelling.
