Hamilton, Ontario’s Superstar Crush make a bold entrance with their debut album Way Too Much, out now with the swaggering single “Do What U Wanna.” Glitter-soaked and emotionally charged, the record captures the highs and lows of growing up, presented through crunchy guitars, confetti-like synths, bratty vocals, and unfiltered lyrics. Across 12 tracks, the band documents anxiety, heartbreak, joy, and everything in between with raw immediacy.
Anchoring the release is “Do What U Wanna,” a groove-driven pop-rock cut about jealousy, rejection, and regaining confidence. Guitarist Sam Hansell admits the track came from envy over drummer Truaxe’s popular song “Tru Blu.” “I rushed home and cranked this little piggy out,” Hansell says. The song’s mix of swagger and honesty captures the band’s ethos: fun, heartfelt, and a little unhinged.
Vocalist Marzieh Darling calls the track “a hype-up jam,” noting the way it quickly became a fan favorite. “Girls started messaging me to say it was their go-to shower song, which is when I knew we had something.” Synth player Chloe Butler-Stubbs adds that the recording even hides a playful surprise: “There’s a tiger roar in there. Truaxe snuck it in, and we didn’t catch it until mixing, but we kept it.”
While “Do What U Wanna” stands as the album’s loudest anthem, Way Too Much shifts constantly in sound, moving from punk to bedroom pop to bossa nova to danceable indie rock. The record was recorded across bedrooms, classrooms, and studios with Dwayne Gretzky’s Tyler Kyte, giving it a patchwork, in-the-moment energy.
“We wanted to make something accessible, fun, but still meaningful,” says Butler-Stubbs. Referencing influences as wide as Pulp, Jungle, and early Arcade Fire, the band created an album that feels both deeply personal and wildly eclectic.
