The indie scene is set to welcome a new powerhouse as Suburban Eyes, a trio featuring members of Mineral, Christie Front Drive, and Boys Life, announce their self-titled debut album. With a release date of August 30 under Spartan Records, the album promises to blend the nostalgia of '90s emo with a refreshing twist on indie rock, produced by Jeremy Gomez and mixed by Grammy-winning Peter Katis.
The lead single, "Headlight Torches," now streaming online, is a shimmering testament to the band's evolved sound. It captures a poignant reflection on the passage of time, wrapped in dreamy melodies and lush instrumentation. Fans of the members' previous projects will recognize familiar sonic signatures, but Suburban Eyes forges a new path, steering clear of rehashing past glories.
Jeremy Gomez, who also handled much of the album's production, emphasized the trio's collective desire to break new ground. "All three of us are far enough removed from our past projects at this point," Gomez explains. "Creatively speaking, none of us even gave our previous bands any thought when working on this project."
The involvement of Peter Katis, known for his work with The National and Death Cab for Cutie, elevates the album to new heights. "When Peter began working on the record, it became obvious why he is a sought-after mixing engineer," Gomez says. "There was no other choice but to have Peter continue to mix the rest."
Suburban Eyes' album-making process was marked by introspection and a virtual collaboration that transformed challenges into opportunities. This approach allowed the band to refine their sound meticulously, resulting in a collection of songs that balance propulsive energy with ethereal soundscapes.
For Gomez, the formation of Suburban Eyes came at a pivotal moment. "Aside from not being able to do much in 2020, musically I didn’t have anything going on either, so I jumped at the chance to try something new," he reflects. "It just feels great to rekindle my friendships with John and Eric, and to create this collection of songs as effortlessly as we did."
John Anderson shares a similar sentiment, expressing deep personal fulfillment. "Making this record has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Anderson adds. "I feel like Suburban Eyes is the most important band I’ve ever been in, and it doesn’t matter to me if the general public shares the sentiment."
