Sonic Sunset has a sound that I find very familiar and I would compare it to bands like The Drums but with a female main vocal. This EP starts with the track “Lose” which I would say has very washed out vocals but musically is on par with M83. I feel like this is the new indie rock standard, synth and drum machines with washed out, reverb soaked vocals. It feels very modern and urgent like this music couldn’t exist even just a few years ago. Track two “Substance” adds male vocals and it’s a nice touch. Overall I’d have to call this eclectic because the style definitely varies from track to track but has components to it that make it aesthetically all feel like the same band. I like that each track feels very different from the last but still makes up a cohesive EP release. I might classify this as somewhat shoegaze and drone over traditional indie pop as it doesn’t ever really get to a bright big chorus and that’s ok. In some ways it almost has a little bit of a My Bloody Valentine feel especially on the last track. “All The Trees In Hell” almost has feels like Ian Curtis is singing and in my book that’s always a good thing. Looking through their bio I see the word darkwave and I think that’s a very good fitting adjective for this. It’s somewhere between indiepop and 70’s goth.
