Boston songwriter and guitarist Sean Coleman launches his new collaborative project with a blues-rock burner built around betrayal, confrontation and the powerhouse vocals of Mia Boostrom.
Boston’s Sean Coleman Project has made its official arrival with “You’ve Got To Choose,” a swaggering blues-rock debut single that introduces a project built around musical collaboration and a refusal to stay boxed inside a single genre.
Featuring vocalist Mia Boostrom, known for appearances on The Voice and America’s Got Talent, the track takes a classic tale of infidelity and turns it into a steadily escalating confrontation. What began in Coleman’s mind as a gospel song ultimately evolved into something tougher and more combustible, with its relatively lean arrangement leaving plenty of room for Boostrom’s vocal performance to command the spotlight.
The song’s bluesy foundation is filled out by an unusually deep bench of musicians. Andrew Gravel takes the lead guitar solo alongside guitarists Bill Danylik, Sam Crawford and Coleman, while Brad Goff supplies Hammond organ, Sean McLaughlin handles bass and Mike Levesque drives the track from behind the kit. McLaughlin also produced the song at 37’ Productions in Rockland, Massachusetts.
“You’ve Got To Choose” offers the first taste of the Sean Coleman Project’s debut album, Apropos of Nothing, due in October. Rather than following one stylistic lane, the forthcoming record moves through classic rock, blues and Americana while reaching into gospel, soul, folk, jazz and country, drawing inspiration from the wide-open musical variety Coleman grew up hearing.
The project follows Coleman’s work with longtime band The Bleeding Hearts and his collaboration with disability rights activist Elizabeth Bonker on 2022’s I Am In Here, which also featured Tom Morello.
For now, “You’ve Got To Choose” is a muscular opening statement: vintage-minded without feeling preserved in amber, and powered by a group of players given ample room to let the song rip.
