Seattle quartet RUB blend synth-pop, indie rock, and psychedelic soul on “City Pop,” a danceable search for a place where simply being yourself is enough.
Seattle alt-pop quartet RUB have returned with “City Pop,” their first new single since the release of their live album Live At The Neptune earlier this year. The track finds the band wrapping a thoughtful message inside the colorful synths, vocal harmonies, and danceable rhythms that have become central to their sound.
“City Pop” imagines traveling to a fictional city where people can exist freely without being judged, followed, or criticized. Rather than treating that destination as pure fantasy, RUB use it to examine the everyday pressures that make such a place feel necessary in the first place.
That tension gives the song its bite. The music remains bright and inviting while vocalist Princella Ray delivers a message rooted in frustration with the world outside. RUB never let that weight drag the track down, instead turning it into a call for freedom carried by an energetic mix of synth-pop, indie rock, and psychedelic soul.
Formed in 2022, RUB bring together musicians with deep roots in Seattle’s rock and pop communities. Ray has performed with Trick Candles and Cute Lepers, while Robbie Luna has played with Trick Candles and Panama Gold. Shaun Crawford brings experience from Bear Axe and Shaun Crawford & The Reasons, with drummer Bob Husak previously playing in The Blakes and Killer Workout.
That combined experience has quickly carried RUB onto major hometown stages. The group has appeared at Bumbershoot and The Moore Theatre, performed during Seattle’s official Sir Mix-a-Lot Day celebration, and played live on KEXP. Their debut single “Contentment” was also selected as a KEXP Song of the Day.
With “City Pop,” the quartet continue building a sound that refuses to separate thoughtful ideas from physical movement. Heavy harmonies and bright production keep the song firmly pointed toward the dance floor, even as its message asks listeners to imagine something better beyond it.
RUB may be dreaming about an imaginary city, but the desire behind “City Pop” is grounded firmly in the present.
