Chicago indie pop-rock group Push Puppets have unveiled a touching new single and video, “Probably,” from their fourth album Tethered Together, out now via Flowering Tree Music. The song and video honor Louie, frontman Erich Specht’s beloved basset hound, capturing both the sadness of loss and the joy of remembering a loved one.
“Probably” builds from gentle harmonies into a powerful chorus that longs for one last message to someone who has passed. The track grows in intensity with the help of a string quartet, lifting the final chorus and outro into a dramatic conclusion. The video adds an animated layer, created with artwork by Turkish artist Uluc Ali Kilic and brought to life by Tcomas Studio, tying Specht’s personal story to striking visuals.
Push Puppets are led by Erich Specht (vocals, guitar) and joined by Steve Frisbie (guitar, vocals), Kyle Magnusson (keyboards), John William Lauler (bass), and Greg Essig (drums). For this project, they also worked with violinist Stephanie “Sly” Young, violist Katherine Andrick, cellist Molly Rife, and violinist Kelly Jozwiak to expand the sound. The album was produced by Specht and Doug McBride (Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Silversun Pickups, Cheap Trick) and recorded at Gravity Studios in Chicago.
Tethered Together balances shimmering pop hooks with thoughtful lyrics about love, loss, and human connection. Songs like “Shake It Like You Mean It,” “Launching a Satellite,” and “Similar” show the group’s ability to blend catchy melodies with reflective themes. Across the record, strings and occasional horns deepen the arrangements, giving the music a layered, cinematic feel.
The new album also demonstrates Push Puppets’ range, moving from lighthearted tracks like “Tell Colleen to Calm Down” to heavier pieces such as “Hearts Are Fragile” and closing with the dramatic “The Logical Conclusion.”
With Tethered Together, Push Puppets present their most expansive work to date, combining sharp instrumentation, melodic vocals, and heartfelt storytelling. “Probably” stands out as one of the most personal tracks, both a celebration of Louie’s life and a universal message about holding onto love after loss.
