New York City band Point Break 2 have officially released their self-titled debut EP on Naturally Records. The record delivers a gritty and unpredictable take on rock & roll, with jagged edges, distorted textures, and a sly sense of humor that sets them apart.
The lead single, “Hall of Justice,” arrived with a music video and has already become a defining statement for the group. The band reflected on its importance, saying:
“We love ‘Hall Of Justice’ because it’s a literal recording of the moment Point Break 2 went from a high-quality fun fuckaround to crystallizing into an actual band. It was written, recorded (almost entirely live), and mixed in the span of one very productive weekend. And it highlights all of the band's inherent, nascent strengths, while also offering some tantalizing feints at things to come. We're all very excited.”
Musically, “Hall of Justice” lurches forward with a bass-and-drum groove that recalls the swagger of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West,” while the vocals cut with a dry, caustic edge that could sit alongside early Beck. Guitars snarl and buzz like a collision between Sonic Youth and garage rock’s messier corners, giving the track a raw yet precise pull.
Elsewhere on the EP, “Dracula 2” combines the darkness of 2000s-era Nick Cave with the off-kilter textures of Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac, while the distortion-heavy title track leans into McGrath’s scuffed pop instincts, echoing the scuzzier side of Swell Maps. The whole set is glued together by warm, lo-fi mixes and the mastering of Sarah Register (Talk Normal, Kim Gordon), which preserves the EP’s restless energy.
Point Break 2 began as a casual outlet for Ted McGrath (These Are Powers, The Flag), but quickly became a full band with Ryan Crozier (The Flag, Fletcher C Johnson Band), Kris Liakos (Fixtures), and Billy Bouchard (Ice Balloons, Dancehall Crashers) contributing. Following recording, Joe Stickney (Bear In Heaven, Ex-Mazed) joined as full-time drummer, giving their live shows even more force and spontaneity.
Now with their debut EP out in the world, Point Break 2 offer a sound that is as playful as it is confrontational—rock music that rattles, snarls, and refuses to sit still.
