Philadelphia singer-songwriter Jeff Hartwig, known as Battleflagg, dropped his new EP, Solastalgia, on January 7, 2025. The project, co-produced by Daniel Knowles (Sharon Van Etten, Cigarettes After Sex), dives into themes of loss, change, and the shifting landscapes of home. The title comes from philosopher Glenn Albrecht’s term for the emotional distress felt when one’s environment transforms in unsettling ways—a fitting concept for Hartwig’s introspective, vivid songwriting.
Battleflagg began in 2020 as a creative outlet for Hartwig, who felt compelled to push back against a world consumed by social and political turmoil. The project blends rock instrumentation with ambient synths, drum loops, and samples, crafting a sound that’s both expansive and intimate. With its heart-on-sleeve lyrics and anthemic choruses, Battleflagg bridges the gap between Americana, indie rock, and ambient pop.
Hartwig’s musical career spans decades. As the lead singer of King Flux, he shared stages with punk legends like the Ramones, though the band eventually dissolved. Moving through the Americana and indie circuits, he played alongside acts like Third Eye Blind, Cake, and Train during their early years. After a stint in law and the release of the 2022 EP The Blood Meridians, Hartwig reignited his passion for music, drawing collaborators from both sides of the Atlantic.
For Solastalgia, Hartwig assembled a wide range of contributors, including members of The War on Drugs, Ethel Cain, and Japanese Breakfast. The EP’s first single, “Ghosts,” was released on December 4, 2024, offering a glimpse into a record filled with reflective moments and lush arrangements.
Battleflagg stands out by combining emotionally resonant lyrics with a sound that feels fresh yet rooted in timeless influences. This approach not only captures the beauty of nostalgia but also gives a sense of hope amid change, making it a powerful addition to the indie and Americana landscape.
Speaking about the new music, Hartwig hopes listeners will find universality in his stories. “I want people to feel the power of the simple snapshots within these songs,” he says, “and to connect more deeply with the people and places around them, especially during times of change.”
