Australian heavy music innovators Northlane return with the crushing new single “CUT_it,” offering another look at their forthcoming seventh album, Anemoia.
Northlane have unleashed their new single “CUT_it,” the latest preview of their seventh studio album Anemoia, due October 30.
Built around the bone-deep exhaustion of burnout, “CUT_it” finds the Australian band translating mental and physical fatigue into a suffocating combination of low-end grooves, electronic textures and explosive heaviness. Vocalist Marcus Bridge moves into a particularly menacing register as the track builds, giving its depiction of complete depletion an appropriately visceral edge.
The song follows previous single “Evian,” with the two tracks beginning to reveal the striking contrasts at the heart of Anemoia. Executive produced by Jordan Fish, the upcoming album was initially inspired by guitarist and songwriter Jon Deiley seeing a set from UK producer Evian Christ. The experience prompted Deiley to explore how the emotional intensity and physical scale of trance music could coexist with guitars and the catharsis of heavy music.
Across the resulting record, Northlane expand their electronic metal foundation through euphoric trance, drum-and-bass, jungle, pop, massive breakdowns and unconventional grooves. Its title refers to the feeling of nostalgia for a time or place one has never personally experienced, giving the album a framework for exploring the tension between present-day darkness and an imagined sense of freedom.
Anemoia follows Northlane’s 2022 album Obsidian, which reached No. 1 in Australia. More than 15 years into their career, the band have accumulated over 500 million streams while continually reshaping their combination of heavy music and electronic experimentation.
Rather than simply pushing toward greater darkness, Anemoia promises to place heaviness alongside a more hopeful and human perspective. “CUT_it” represents the harsher end of that spectrum, turning burnout into one of the album’s most punishing early statements.
