New Jersey-based indie pop band Those Looks has premiered a new music video for “You Know Where.” The track is from their debut full-length album, Cults Near Me, out on Mint 400 Records.
“You Know Where” is a summer anthem that first hit the airwaves on a November album. The song’s new music video release situates this track where it belongs, in the balmy days of August.
Filmed in two different parts of Florida, Key West and Anna Maria Island, the video follows band members as they traverse boats, beaches, and bars. The song’s lyrics, penned by drummer Shaun Ellis, speak about taking the time to slow down and indulge in the beauty around you, and everyone in the video appears to be taking Ellis’s advice. Life is short – why not chat up a mannequin, don your best speedo, or throw back a few pink cocktails?
Amidst the revelry, there’s also a hint of melancholy. “I can’t let a fun song get by without adding a touch of darkness, a little memento mori. In the lyrics, it’s swimming in a thunderstorm. In the video, it’s me riding a bicycle through a graveyard,” says singer Kelly Bolding.
With some help from Lambertville-based singer-songwriter Brad Staudle and filmmaker Trina Bardusco, the band shot the video entirely using a 1990s-era Hi8 camcorder, giving the footage a warm, lo-fi feel, the edges of objects softened by a pixelated haze.
“If you look closely, you’ll notice that the full band never appears together. That’s because we shot the video on two separately planned trips that happened to fall within a few months of one another,” says Ellis. “Our music has a beachy element to it, so we took the opportunity to lean into that visually.”
You can catch Those Looks at the Harvest Moon Music Festival in Morrisville, PA, on September 14th. Over the next several months, the band will also be releasing a cover of “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” by The Smiths and an original 5-song EP, both on Mint 400 Records.
