The song reflects on the life and tragic death of Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old U.S. serviceman who died by self-immolation outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., in February 2024. Thorburn describes Bushnell’s act as an extreme protest against ongoing global injustices. For Thorburn, Bushnell’s death serves as a haunting reminder of the moral crises of our time, particularly the suffering in Gaza.
“I wanted to hold that pain for him,” Thorburn shares. The song delves into the profound grief and helplessness surrounding Bushnell’s death and the broader human rights issues it highlights.
