BAND: THE SWEET THINGS
BloodMakesNoise Rating: 6/10
Genre: Country Twang, Bluesy Rock
What the band says they sound like: Southern Rock, featuring members of Black Crowes, Jane Lee Hooker, Paul Simon
What we think they sound like: Technically played to perfection for what it is. Great bluesy rock in the vein of Exile On Main Street Rolling Stones without the horn section. I need more if you’re gonna just do something that everyone has been doing since 1969. However, that may be your jam and then you’re gonna love this.

BAND: NEW JUNK CITY
BloodMakesNoise Rating: 9/10
Genre: Indie Rock, 90’s Alt Rock
What the band says they sound like: Gin Blossom, Blink 182, The Menzingers, The Thermals
What we think they sound like: Oh man, this is like 1996 and The Lemonheads joined up with Soul Asylum, The Smoking Popes and Gin Blossoms to write a radio hit. This hits a soft spot for me of when I was a teenager and every song on the radio was perfect, never a skipper. Looking forward to an album to see if the same holds true for New Junk City.

BloodMakesNoise Rating: 7.5/10
Genre: Grunge, Indie Rock
What the band says they sound like: My Bloody Valentine, Sugar, Swervedriver and Catherine Wheel
What we think they sound like: This band sounds like Failure playing songs written by Evan Dando. The bass has that crunchy 90’s tone like Failure or Jawbreaker with rough edged grunge guitars. I suppose Swervedriver is another good comparison. Either way it has a 90’s feel if that is what you are looking for and it doesn’t seem like an imitation, it feels genuine and played through a JCM 900 and sung by a dude wearing flannel.

BAND: ERNEST MOON
BloodMakesNoise Rating: 8/10
Genre: Country tinged Indie Pop/folk
What the band says they sound like: The Blockheads, Arab Strap, Talking Heads and The Specials
What we think they sound like: Maybe it’s just this song but I hear not one ounce of The Specials or Talking Heads in this, can’t remember what Arab Strap sound like and I don’t know The Blockheads. To me this feels like mellow folky and somewhere between Nick Drake and Travis and maybe a hint of American folk artists like Rocky Votolato or other traditional folk guys from Nashville. This to me is a nice song but lacks significant distinction from everything else in the overcrowded folk genre, but still a nice song.

BAND: YAWN MOWER
BloodMakesNoise Rating: 10/10
Genre: Punky Indie Rock
What the band says they sound like: Mike Krol, They Might Be Giants, Wet Leg
What we think they sound like: Well the band definitely knows what sound they are going for and they achieve it on this newest single which is in advance of their upcoming debut LP. Yawn Mower go from a duo to a 5 piece on their newest recordings and add musical depth that wasn’t there on previous EP’s and it’s fucking fantastic. If you love what Wet Leg is doing, meet their male counterparts. It’s funny, it’s catchy and it rocks.
