California–Danish dream pop quartet Moon Panda have unveiled their latest single “Penny,” a playful yet introspective track from their upcoming third album Dumb Luck, released September 26 via Moon Panda/Virgin Music Group. The band is also taking their lush, atmospheric sound across the U.S. this fall, with tour dates spanning the Northeast, West Coast, and Texas.
“Penny” arrives as a shapeshifting song with its own mischievous spirit. Originally written in a Beatles-inspired style, it later took cues from Pixies and Tame Impala before evolving into the dreamy, slow-burn version that appears on the record. It’s a song with character and edge—equal parts soft, strange, and self-aware.
Recorded primarily at the home studio of vocalist Maddy Myers and guitarist Gustav Moltke, with production from bassist/keyboardist George Godwin and drumming by Josh Cabitac, Dumb Luck marks Moon Panda’s most collaborative work yet. The final touches were handled by producer Adam Thein (Djo), who also worked with the band on 2023’s Sing Spaceship, Sing!. The result is their most sensuous and fully realized album so far, echoing the lush intimacy of The Cardigans and The Carpenters, while exploring the beauty and pain of transformation.
Written amid major life changes—relocation from Copenhagen to California, new parenthood, and rediscovery of creative identity—Dumb Luck reflects both vulnerability and resilience. Myers describes the process as one of loss and renewal: the struggle to find yourself again through change, and the gratitude that follows.
More than anything, Dumb Luck is a celebration of connection and timing — the rare alchemy of four musicians creating something intimate yet universal. With “Penny” leading the way, Moon Panda continue to build a dream pop world that feels timeless, cinematic, and deeply human.
