Today, I sat down and listened to Brooklyn based dream pop band Atlas Engine for the first time. Honestly, dream pop might be an oversimplification. Dream pop with a nice dollop of modern psychedelic vibes strikes me as more accurate.
It feels and sounds like the happy(ish) less dystopian musical take on what I imagine Blade Runner would be if Thomas Bangalter, writer of “interstellar 555” (visual companion to Daft Punk album “Discovery”), wrote it on some of the best shrooms possible.
That was a lot, I know.
That was also a compliment as well as an indictment of just how many movies and albums I listen to or watch on a regular basis. I clearly have no life, but I digress...
I feel like I can actually touch the sounds that this single makes as I feel it whizzing pass my ears. The production is fantastic in its almost synth yet analog texture. You feel that great care was taken with every note and key which embodies the LUSH layering that makes this sound like a made-up car chase scene in TRON.
I am big on music that feels all-encompassing and cinematic. As filmmaker and music supervisor, we know that making your music this, accidentally or purposefully, adds both dimensions but more importantly potential, regarding licensing and what not.
In short, put this in your visual project, fellow artists.
Nick La Falce is clearly in his creative bag as multi-instrumentalist but has an equally talented group behind him that are on the same page in almost every way. They have to be for them to sonically create such a beautiful landscape that I can see with no effort.
I am pretty excited to hear this album and see how the pieces fit together. It can only go up from here.
