Meet Boston Indie Rock Multi Instrumentalist Ghost On TV

Ghost on TV is the new recording project from Boston-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Paul DePasquale (Vary Lumar). After soft-releasing debut album Appealing and debut EP Melt on Mild in 2020 during the pandemic, Ghost on TV returns with two new singles – “Daily Laws” in November 2024 and “Drained” in January 2025 – via Swoom Records. Both tracks will be featured on Ghost on TV’s new album Mister Silence, set for release in February 2025.

Influences, Artist Influences:

Blood Makes Noise: How did the band form and what does the band name mean?

Paul DePasquale: The band came together in 2020 during Covid. I came up with the name after realizing how much I loved watching movies, and music videos of artists that have gone to the next life. Real art just lasts forever and it's kind of comforting knowing they can be somewhat immortal on a random Saturday early morning viewing on TNT or VH1.

Previous musical projects? How'd you first get into music?

I grew up in a musical family. And started performing when I was 4 or 5. My first instruments were trumpet, piano, bass, drums and guitar. By 14, I was playing mostly all instruments. To this day I can make music out of anything but a reed instrument. I started to write, perform my own music in coffee shops in 2000 growing up in New York. In 2004, I started the band Vary Lumar in Boston, which performed until 2018.

First concert that you ever went to?

Van Halen’s 1994 Right Here, Right Now tour. Crystal Pepsi was big that year. Before that it was Beach Boys, I think, in 1990 at a beach bar in Wildwood, New Jersey.

What's your writing process like?

Usually drum and bass first, and the rest falls in from there. Occasionally, I will have a melody that strikes me and I build a song around it but it's rare.

What's the live experience like and your philosophy on playing live? Do you think the music live should be identical to the recorded version or should it be its own thing?

I like a tight set that sounds like the album, but live should always give something a bit more raw. No matter how I play something live – solo or in a band – it's a must to take the crowd somewhere. I think plotting a set list that does so is super important.

Has the band toured? What has the touring experience been, best shows? Worst shows?

Not yet. But maybe soon.

What's up next for the band?
Some shows, some follow-up tracks, some art.
