Kentucky Indie Rock Band Half Nelson Offers Up New Single "Runtime"

On “Runtime,” Half Nelson sound thrillingly aware of the clock—and determined to outrun it. The song tears by in a burst of punk immediacy, driven by taut guitars and tightly stacked vocals, its repeated lines landing with the pressure of a countdown you can’t escape. There’s real tension here, the kind that mirrors daily life in a moment defined by constant alertness, where headlines blur together and nothing ever seems to resolve. Rather than spelling out its anger, “Runtime” lets implication do the work, capturing the exhaustion and frustration of watching the same cycles of gun violence and political inertia repeat, uninterrupted.

What makes the track hit so hard is its discipline. “Runtime” wastes nothing: it burns fast, hits sharp, and disappears before comfort can settle in. You can hear the raw bite of Mannequin Pussy and The Breeders in its urgency, balanced by the melodic clarity and snap of that dog. and The Beths. It’s confrontational without being heavy-handed—a song that trusts the listener to feel what it’s pointing toward without underlining every thought.

That confidence reflects a band quickly coming into their own. Formed in 2022 and solidifying their lineup in 2024, Half Nelson pull from a wide range of musical roots—folk, synth-pop, choir, and classical—to create something emotionally resonant and sonically sharp. They’ve already shared stages with Saturdays at Your Place, the Dreaded Laramie, and Scrunchies, and were recently selected for Midwest Friends Fest 2025. Half Nelson make music for people who feel too much, think too hard, and still want to dance through the anxiety. “Runtime” doesn’t linger—but it absolutely stays with you.
