Chicago band Kaput is getting ready to release their first album, One, on April 25. The group includes vocalist and keyboardist Nadia Garofalo (formerly of Ganser), producer and engineer Brian Fox, and drummer M. Sord (Jon Spencer and the Hitmakers). Their music blends post-punk, no wave, and noise rock into something sharp and full of energy.
The album has already introduced three songs: “High Wire,” “Runner,” and “Sucker.” Each track gives a different look into the band’s style. “High Wire” is tense and gritty, moving with pounding drums and screeching synths. Garofalo’s voice cuts through it all with purpose and force. “Runner” adds a more melodic touch but keeps the same urgent tone. Critics have praised Garofalo’s vocals, noting her balance of intensity and charm. “Sucker” is fast-paced and catchy, but still raw and edgy.
Kaput’s sound takes ideas from artists like Kim Gordon, Brainiac, and Swans. Their songs feel experimental and fierce, but not chaotic. The band explores themes like frustration, identity, and emotion—especially the way anger is seen and used. Garofalo said she wanted to show how anger can be useful or even thoughtful, especially in a world that often tells women to hide their feelings.
One is the result of over a year of work between the three members. It shifts between fast and slow, loud and quiet, but always stays focused. Each song brings something new without losing the band’s core voice.
Kaput is a welcome addition to the modern post-punk world. Their music is bold, unpolished, and full of ideas.
