Montreal trio expand their sound ahead of debut album on Simone Records
Montreal trio Hush continue building toward their debut album with “Phasing,” a new single released March 4, 2026 via Simone Records. The track follows last year’s “The Mirrors Were Right,” pushing further into the band’s hazy, immersive take on dream-pop.
“Phasing” centers on shifting perception and emotional instability, exploring the space between internal narrative and lived reality. The songwriting moves in fragments, blending memory, doubt, and fleeting connection into a loose but cohesive structure. Rather than telling a linear story, the lyrics unfold in overlapping images, creating a sense of motion that never fully settles.
That fluidity carries into the production. The track is built on soft, cyclical patterns, with layered textures that rise and recede without sharp transitions. Guitars, synths, and rhythmic elements drift together, forming a dense but weightless sound. Subtle tape manipulation and the interplay between analog and digital tones give the music a slightly warped, out-of-phase feel.
Vocally, Paige Barlow delivers a restrained and open performance that sits lightly above the instrumentation. The tone remains controlled and distant, reinforcing the song’s sense of detachment while still carrying emotional weight. The result is a balance between clarity and blur, where the vocal anchors the track without fully grounding it.
Hush — composed of Barlow, Miles Dupire-Gagnon, and Gabriel Lambert — draw from a wide range of influences, including dream-pop, psych-pop, trip-hop, and 90s electronic textures. Their sound reflects that mix, blending atmospheric layering with a steady melodic core.
The release is accompanied by a video co-created by Barlow and Aabid Youssef, extending the song’s visual language through soft focus imagery and shifting perspectives. Like the track itself, the visuals move between scales, mirroring the tension between the intimate and the expansive.
“Phasing” also serves as the opening track for Hush’s upcoming debut album, expected later this spring. With this release, the band continue to refine a sound built on texture, repetition, and subtle emotional shifts.
