There's a particular kind of magic that happens when a bar hands the aux, or in this case, the turntable, over to whoever walks through the door. That's the idea behind Bring Your Own Vinyl Night, a new recurring event hosted by Off the Records, a group co-founded by Brooklyn musicians Ryan Zakin (of the indie rock outfit Gardenia) and Alyx Asterix.
The concept is simple: Bring a record, put it on, and let the crowd decide where the night goes. No headliner, no curated playlist, no algorithm. Just whatever's tucked under someone's arm that evening, from a scratched-up soul 45 to a first pressing someone's been hoarding since college.
"Listening to music, specifically vinyl, is usually such a solitary activity for people," Zakin says. "To have a space to not only play your records on a nice speaker set, but also share it with others who also appreciate new music, has been so special for us." Asterix agrees, saying his favorite part of Vinyl Night is discovering a new favorite tune.
For Zakin and Asterix, both active players in New York's DIY music scene, the night is as much about community as it is about music. Alphaville has long been a haven for Bushwick's arts crowd, and Bring Your Own Vinyl Night slots naturally into that lineage - lowkey, unpretentious, and built around the idea that a great night doesn't need a headliner to feel like an event.
There's something inherently democratic about the format. A stranger's record collection becomes a kind of story, played out loud for a room full of people who might never have crossed paths otherwise. One song in, and you already know something about the person who brought it.
As vinyl continues its long resurgence, and as more bars lean into DJ sets over live bands, Bring Your Own Vinyl Night feels like a small correction: a reminder that music nights don't need production value to hit hard. Sometimes all it takes is a needle, a crate of records, and a room full of people willing to listen to whatever comes next.
