Chicago band Kaput has just released their debut album One, and it’s making noise in the post-punk and no wave scenes. The group includes singer and keyboardist Nadia Garofalo (formerly of Ganser), producer Brian Fox (Electrical Audio), and drummer M. Sord (Jon Spencer and the Hitmakers). Together, they mix sharp sounds and raw energy to create something unique and powerful.
Kaput’s music is bold and experimental, drawing from artists like Kim Gordon, Brainiac, and This Heat. Their style is loud, tense, and sometimes even chaotic, but always with a clear vision. The band’s sound blends harsh electronics, fast drumming, and emotional vocals. It's not about being clean or polished—Kaput wants you to feel every part of it.
Their new album One is the result of over a year of writing and recording. Each track explores the idea of anger from different angles. Some songs are loud and frantic, like “Sucker,” while others, like “Teal,” slow things down and offer space to think. The lyrics explore both frustration and reflection, often from a personal and honest point of view.
Garofalo says, “I think we live in a world that (especially if you’re feminine) tells you to hide or ignore your anger. I wanted to explore its facets. It’s not always negative—it can teach you things if you listen.”
The album is already getting attention for its intense sound and fearless approach. On songs like “Runner” and “High Wire,” Garofalo’s voice cuts through buzzing synths and pounding drums, showing both strength and vulnerability.
Kaput’s music might not be for everyone, but that’s the point. It’s meant to challenge, to shake things up, and to say something real. With One, they’ve made a strong first statement—and it’s only the beginning.
