Flash Hits are back with a new album called Witch Kids Seek Magic World, coming out June 13 on Strange Mono. The album will be available digitally and on a limited-edition cassette, which you can pre-order now on Bandcamp. All cassette sales will help support Community Action Relief Project (CARP), a group that provides aid to people in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Along with the album news, the band has released a video for the song “Joy Hunter,” giving fans a first look at the new music. The video matches the song’s wild energy, with colorful scenes and fast cuts that fit the band’s trippy and loud sound.
Flash Hits began in 2012 as a recording project between Damien C. Taylor and Mike Hammel. Over time, the band grew and worked with many different musicians. They've recorded music across the country, including albums like The Basement Tape, The Bloodline Tape, and Noises. In 2022, they released Growths on Frontier Records, showing off their noisy, dreamy mix of post-punk and art rock.
The new album, Witch Kids Seek Magic World, was recorded with Bill Fries in Philadelphia and includes help from Ryan Van Kreidt, Dan Angel, and Kacey Barnes. It continues the band’s creative sound, using strange instruments, layered guitars, and poetic lyrics. Fans of The Replacements, Polvo, and Brian Jonestown Massacre will find a lot to like.
Taylor described the weekend-long recording session as a unique experience. They used old tape machines, created loops, and recorded everything from sitar to samples. They also spent time watching old TV shows with the sound off, listening to a wide mix of music, and finding inspiration in artwork and conversation.
