Boston songwriter Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures have released their new single, “Lady Bathory,” a sharp turn into heavier territory that blends alternative rock, psychedelia, and garage-rock intensity.
Following January’s “Hollow Choir” and the band’s pair of 2025 Temporary Circus EPs, “Lady Bathory” introduces a more abrasive and aggressive side of Smith’s evolving sound. Driven by angular guitars, pounding rhythms, and menacing Hammond B3 organ, the track pushes beyond the folk and psych influences that shaped many of his recent releases.
Inspired by the story of Elizabeth Báthory, the Hungarian noblewoman whose alleged crimes have fueled centuries of folklore and vampire mythology, the song uses history as a lens to examine a world where truth feels increasingly difficult to define.
Rather than retelling the historical account directly, Smith uses the figure of Lady Bathory to explore themes of misinformation, uncertainty, and personal frustration. The result is a song that feels both surreal and urgent, pairing vivid imagery with a raw vocal performance unlike anything in his catalog to date.
Produced and engineered by Erik von Geldern and Don Schweihofer at Berlin Audio Productions in Massachusetts, “Lady Bathory” marks a new creative chapter for Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures. Von Geldern contributes guitar, bass, and keyboards, while Schweihofer handles drums and percussion.
Since emerging on the Boston music scene more than a decade ago, Smith has built a reputation for restless creativity, recently celebrating the release of his 80th song. His music has moved freely between alternative rock, Americana, funk, indie, and psych influences, with each project revealing a different side of his songwriting.
More new music is expected later this year, with Smith hinting at a future EP or full-length release. For now, “Lady Bathory” stands as a bold statement from an artist unafraid to challenge both himself and his audience.
