New York City band Dead Tooth just announced their first full-length album. The self-titled record will come out on July 18 through Trash Casual. Along with the news, the band shared a new single called “You Never Do Shit,” which is now streaming on YouTube. The song also has a choreographed dance video, made by singer Zach Ellis and choreographer Nola Sporn Smith.
Dead Tooth describes their music as a mix of post-punk and dark disco. “You Never Do Shit” tells the story of a musician who turns to crime after feeling stuck. The song was first written for a fake band in the Apple TV show City on Fire. Though that version didn’t make the final cut, Ellis kept the song and brought it to Dead Tooth. He recorded the final vocals using a vintage microphone in the studio, and liked the raw sound so much he didn’t re-record them.
The album, Dead Tooth, is filled with rough guitar sounds, fast saxophone lines, and intense lyrics. Ellis uses his voice to share stories about the world’s struggles, both global and personal. The album is noisy, bold, and full of emotion.
Dead Tooth started as a team-up between Ellis and Andrew Bailey (from the band DIIV) when they both worked at a Brooklyn diner. Their earlier EPs, Still Beats and Pig Pile, earned praise from music magazines like NME and Spin. However on their most recent tour incorporating a new lineup with fill in guitar virtuoso Melissa Lucciola of Gustaf & Francie Moon, the band really hit an awesome peak in their live shows.
The band recorded Dead Tooth over two years in different studios around New York. Mixing engineer Tom Beaujour (Guided By Voices, Nada Surf) helped bring the sound together, keeping it sharp and simple. After years of touring in the U.S. and Europe, and sharing stages with acts like GWAR and Bass Drum of Death, Dead Tooth is finally ready to share their full story.
