From note one of the first track David Wilson and The Summer Husbands it’s not what I expected from the Miss Ohio frontman. This was not indie rock, this had soul and smooth organ, it reminded me of a cross between something Paul McCartney combined with Sam Cooke would write. The song 1983 has such a great groove and vibe to it. The next track “Evangeline” feels sort of similar but a little more Neutral Milk Hotel with the horn section and a more folk feel overall. The hint of country twang on track two moves the second track further away from the soul sound of track one. Track 3 “Austin” continues with the indie folk genre mixed with country twang, almost feels like a Bob Dylan cover but more polished like if Wilco was the band covering it. So many good influences are in every moment of this EP. It’s another artist who understands how to take the last 50 years of music and extract the bits and pieces that speak to him and reformulate it into his own vision and story. On the final track it does hit me that the vocal is a little bit Mark Oliver Everett of Eels. The final track “My Friends” has that folk and country vibe but with a minor dissonant chord that gives it an ominous presence.
This release is one of those few releases you’d want a vinyl copy of. This feels like a glass of wine at twilight type release that should be played on a record player to obtain that optimal warm sound that this release gives off. This is what I love about New Jersey, there is so much talent packed into this state and it always feels like bands here just do it differently. They aren’t just some phony rip off, they are genuine artists creating something so pure and honest. This release is that, genuine is the word I’d use that describes it best.
