Brooklyn-based post-hardcore band Common Sage is set to release their highly anticipated new album Closer To; on November 22 via Equal Vision Records. To build excitement for the album, they’ve dropped the raw and emotional single “Until I’m Gone,” which tackles themes of loss and change through a deeply personal lens.
The song takes a unique approach, told from the perspective of lead singer Julian Rosen as he reflects on another person’s struggles. Rosen explained that while many of the themes on the album are personal, “Until I’m Gone” focuses on the experience of witnessing someone else’s hardships, making it a powerful exploration of empathy and the impact of those around us.
Common Sage’s sound is a modern twist on post-hardcore, with influences from the legendary Long Island emo scene. Their music blends melodic post-hardcore with dissonant, chaotic riffs that create an intense and captivating experience. It’s a sound that’s both familiar and fresh, drawing on the energy of bands like Quicksand and Title Fight while keeping a balance between aggression and melody.
The band’s upcoming album Closer To; follows their journey of refining their style, blending hardcore’s fiery spirit with emotionally driven lyrics. It’s clear that Common Sage has been influenced by the genre’s past but is pushing boundaries to make something new and unique. Their attention to detail and willingness to take creative risks shows through in tracks like “Until I’m Gone,” which strays from simple, predictable structures in favor of more thoughtful, artistic choices.
Common Sage is really carving out their own space in post-hardcore. Their ability to blend intense, chaotic riffs with emotional depth is refreshing, and Closer To; promises to push the boundaries of the genre even further. I’m excited to see where their unique sound takes them—it's clear they have a lot to offer beyond just the raw energy that’s typically expected from post-hardcore bands.
In addition to the new single, Common Sage will be hitting the road in December for a series of West Coast shows supporting Reggie & The Full Effect. This tour is a chance for fans to experience their raw energy live before the full album drops later this month.
