Afloat move with a kind of restless push that feels tied to where they come from. The New Jersey band has been building steady traction in the local scene, and their signing to Mint 400 Records marks a clear next step. With their EP Where I Stand, they laid out a sound that pulls from classic emo while keeping a sharp indie edge, landing somewhere between Tigers Jaw, Balance & Composure, and Arms Length without feeling stuck in the past.
Now they return with “Go and Say It,” a new single that leans into that mix. It’s a tight, midwest-leaning track built on clean hooks and a steady pulse, but there’s tension running under it. The song centers on anxiety, pressure, and the strange weight of things left unsaid.
Since forming in the late 2010s, Afloat has been a key part of the South Jersey indie circuit. Led by Gabby Relos and Josh Rubeo, the band has stayed close to the community, helping run shows through the Head Above Water Collective while also working behind the scenes in recording spaces. That connection shows up in the music—it feels lived-in, not distant.
Critics have taken notice, pointing to the band’s spirited approach and the way they blend a post-hardcore edge with melodies that lean toward pure pop. That same balance carries into the new track, where the band keeps things direct but never flat.
Lead vocalist Gabby Relos had this to say about the new single “Go and Say It is about being honest with what you want, and the way other people can project expectations onto you. For me, it came from realizing that the standards people hold you to aren’t always a reflection of who you actually are.”
She continues “The chorus line, if this is what you want, why don’t you go and say it, comes from that tension when you can clearly see what someone expects from you, but they won’t just say it outright. It’s about that unspoken pressure, where their needs are obvious, but you’re left waiting for them to finally admit it.”
With this release, Afloat sharpen their voice without losing the urgency that got them here.
