Bay Area project blends shoegaze haze and post-punk tension ahead of April release
Bliss Abyss, a Bay Area band featuring members of Wax Idols, Some Ember, and Heaven’s Club, have announced their self-titled debut album, set for release on April 17. Alongside the announcement, the group has shared a new single titled “Red Disgusting,” now available on streaming platforms.
The track continues to define the band’s emerging sound, which sits between shoegaze atmosphere and post-punk drive. Built on sharp guitars and melodic tension, “Red Disgusting” leans into a darker, more confrontational tone. Lyrically, the song centers on fractured relationships and shifting perception, exploring the breakdown of trust and the instability of personal narratives.
Bliss Abyss is led by singer and guitarist Peter Wallner, a longtime figure in the Bay Area underground scene. His past work spans a range of styles, from industrial shoegaze to synth-driven punk, shaping a songwriting approach that balances mood and structure. Across multiple projects, Wallner has developed a sound that pairs dense texture with strong melodic instinct.
The band’s earlier single, “Star,” introduced a brighter side of that approach, offering a more jangly and immediate entry point into the project. Together, the two tracks hint at the range of the upcoming album, which is described as a collection of songs with distinct sonic identities, unified by a consistent emotional tone.
Bliss Abyss began during the pandemic as a solo experiment before evolving into a full band. The project solidified after Wallner connected with producer and bassist Joe Finocchio, who helped shape the material into a cohesive album. The collaboration brings a focused production style that highlights both clarity and edge.
The upcoming record draws from post-punk, shoegaze, and synth-pop influences, but avoids settling into a single lane. Instead, each track is designed to stand on its own while contributing to a broader sonic world. The songwriting leans into surreal imagery and emotional intensity, creating a tone that feels both intimate and distant.
With their debut album on the horizon, Bliss Abyss position themselves as a new project with deep roots and a clear direction.
