Baxter Hall Opens a New Chapter With "The Work" Ahead of September EP

Boston singer-songwriter Baxter Hall returns with the deeply personal single "The Work," introducing an emotionally rich EP arriving Sept. 18.

Boston singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Baxter Hall has returned with "The Work," a powerful new single that serves as the title track to his upcoming four-song EP, due Sept. 18. Blending indie folk, roots rock, and soaring guitar-driven arrangements, the song marks Hall's first new music in more than two years while revealing his most personal songwriting to date.

At its heart, "The Work" is a meditation on healing, self-preservation, and the difficult decision to establish personal boundaries. Inspired by Hall's own experience of going no-contact with a parent, the song explores the grief, empowerment, and emotional complexity that come with breaking painful cycles. Rather than dwelling in sorrow, it gradually transforms into an uplifting anthem of resilience, balancing vulnerability with quiet strength.

Musically, Hall brings together the intimacy of a singer-songwriter with the expressive confidence of an accomplished guitarist. Beginning as a reflective acoustic ballad before expanding into a sweeping rock finale, "The Work" captures both sides of his artistic identity. The arrangement mirrors the song's emotional journey, moving from introspection toward cathartic release without ever losing its sincerity.

Produced by Hall alongside Bella Lepore Hall and Jon Evans at Brick Hill Studio in Orleans, Massachusetts, the recording preserves the raw feeling of its earliest demo while adding carefully layered instrumentation that enhances the song's emotional impact. Acoustic and electric guitars, organ, upright bass, percussion, and subtle production details combine to create a sound that feels both expansive and deeply personal.

The forthcoming The Work EP continues that emotional thread, presenting four songs that examine the same life experience from different perspectives, ranging from grief and anger to reflection and acceptance. It represents a significant creative step for Hall, who has increasingly embraced autobiographical songwriting after years of refining both his musicianship and lyrical voice.

With "The Work," Baxter Hall delivers a moving introduction to his next chapter. Honest, heartfelt, and elevated by dynamic musicianship, the single points toward an EP that promises to be his most intimate and rewarding release yet.
