Alt-pop artist Annika Rose wrestles with the blurry boundary between friendship and romance on “CALL ME,” one of the opening chapters of her forthcoming READ ALL ABOUT IT EP.
Annika Rose is turning complicated relationships into sharply drawn alternative pop on “CALL ME,” a recent single from her forthcoming EP READ ALL ABOUT IT, arriving October 14 in partnership with Broke Records. The track precedes the newly released “TAINTED STATE OF MIND” as Rose continues unveiling the project piece by piece.
Written with Austin Ward and J Tyler Johnson, who also produced the track, “CALL ME” emerged from a period in which Rose was rediscovering her independence after the end of a long-term relationship. When a close friendship began showing signs of becoming something more, she found herself caught between genuine affection and an unwillingness to sacrifice the autonomy she had only recently regained.
That tension gives the song its emotional engine. Sparse, confessional verses gradually open into a warmer chorus, mirroring the push and pull between keeping someone at a safe distance and still wanting them close. Rather than centering on a conventional desire to rekindle a romance, “CALL ME” explores the quieter wish to preserve an important human connection after romantic possibilities have complicated it.
Rose is also extending the world of her music beyond streaming. Each release has been accompanied by an edition of The Bond St. Bulletin, a newspaper she personally writes, prints and distributes. More than 5,000 copies have been circulated so far, turning the stories surrounding her songs into a physical archive for listeners.
It’s an unusually tactile companion to music rooted in deeply personal transitions. Having entered the industry at just 13 before eventually rebuilding her career independently, Rose has increasingly centered her work around creative ownership and lived-in storytelling.
With “CALL ME” and “TAINTED STATE OF MIND” now out, READ ALL ABOUT IT is steadily taking shape ahead of its October 14 release.
