Cold Expectations Find New Meaning in an Old Song on “Waiting for the Pills to Take Effect”

Boston post-punk trio Cold Expectations revive a song first conceived three decades ago, transforming it into an energetic reflection on aging, desperation and the changing meaning of feeling better.

Boston indie post-punk trio Cold Expectations have released their latest single, “Waiting for the Pills to Take Effect,” out now through The Sound Cove. Combining driving guitars, restless rhythms and power-pop hooks, the track gives new life to a song whose origins stretch back more than 30 years.

The song began in 1995, when guitarist and vocalist Steve Prygoda was involved in Boston's punk and poetry scenes. Inspired by a phrase from poet John Wieners about despair, drugs and waiting for medication to work, Prygoda wrote an early version using distorted guitar and a handful of country-inspired chords.

After recording a rough demo with drummer Carl Treichel, he shelved the song for decades.

Its meaning changed considerably when Prygoda revisited it years later. Now taking daily medication for heart-related health issues, he recognized the irony of returning to a song about chemical escape when pills had become necessary for his survival.

With bassist and vocalist JoEllen Saunders and drummer Mike Demers, Prygoda rebuilt the track into a fast-moving blend of post-punk, new wave and power pop.

Demers' frantic drumming, Saunders' melodic basslines and the band's dual-vocal harmonies give the song its urgency, while buzzing guitars and a Moog synthesizer add another layer of energy.

Recorded at Woolly Mammoth Sound in Waltham, Massachusetts, the single was engineered, produced, mixed and mastered by Matthew Alexander, whose contributions helped shape the song's final arrangement.

Although its sound is energetic enough to suggest a reckless night out, Cold Expectations emphasize that the lyrics explore desperation rather than celebration. What once reflected youthful restlessness now carries the weight of getting older and confronting mortality.

Formed in 2016, Cold Expectations have steadily developed their sound from early alt-country influences toward a louder, more aggressive approach to indie and art rock. Their previous releases include the album Static Reactions and the 2025 singles “Our Hearts Need Electricity” and “The Fight.”

“Waiting for the Pills to Take Effect” is available now through The Sound Cove.
