Montreal singer-songwriter Crimson99 follows instinct toward hope, spirituality and self-discovery on her intimate debut EP, Daredevil.
Montreal alternative artist Crimson99 has released her debut EP Daredevil, a five-song collection that blends dream pop, alternative rock and soul with an intentionally loose approach to songwriting.
Crimson99 is the project of Dominican-Canadian musician Maria Brousseau-Labbé, who created Daredevil as an exploration of identity, spirituality and learning to trust her own instincts. Produced by Montreal musician Koko Love, the EP was recorded live in a single day, allowing spontaneity to become part of the finished music.
Rather than chasing polished performances or conventional song structures, Brousseau-Labbé approached the record as an opportunity to let ideas arrive naturally. The resulting five tracks, “I Need You,” “Fix Your Eyes,” “Just Like Heaven,” “Open Up Your Heart” and “Who Am I,” reflect a desire to quiet overthinking and search for something more honest underneath it.
That philosophy is particularly clear on “Open Up Your Heart.” The song explores the temptation to return to people, habits or situations from the past that may have felt good in the moment but ultimately offered little in the long run. Instead of surrendering to that pull, the track looks toward change and the possibility of making it through difficult periods.
That search for a different way forward has roots in Brousseau-Labbé’s own life. Raised by a Dominican mother who trained as a pianist and jazz singer, she grew up surrounded by music. A period of loneliness and restlessness eventually led her on an extended journey through the UK and the Himalayas in 2019. After returning home, she began allowing herself to pursue a musical world of her own.
With Daredevil, Crimson99 introduces that world without attempting to make every edge perfectly smooth. Its imperfections are part of the point: five songs about listening inward, moving forward and figuring out who you are along the way.
