French experimental duo OVOO explore tension, repetition and immersive noise on “II 4:00,” as their debut album, Obsidian, arrives October 2.

Southeastern France experimental duo OVOO are offering another passage into the strange, shadowy world of Obsidian with their latest single, “II 4:00.”

The track arrives ahead of the duo’s debut album, which releases October 2 through a network of independent labels including Day Off Records, Arsenic Solaris and Zann’s Records. Following previous single “VI 4:56,” “II 4:00” reveals a more contemplative side of OVOO’s collision of post-rock, industrial music, noise and experimentation.

Built around the downtempo rhythms of Alexandre, aka Syd Negativv, the track favors patient immersion over outright chaos. Jean-Philippe, aka Astrocyte JFI, surrounds that foundation with dense layers of sound, creating an atmosphere that feels suspended between tension and release.

“II 4:00” also holds particular importance within OVOO’s history. It was the first track to establish the direction of the project and became a musical blueprint for what followed. Its repeating harmonic progression deliberately avoids conventional resolution for much of the piece before eventually giving way to a saturated low D drone.

That drone became a recurring element throughout Obsidian, returning across the album as a kind of signal connecting its individual movements. OVOO describe “II” as the record’s “totem track,” making it an especially fitting entry point into the ideas behind their debut.

The accompanying music video expands that atmosphere through a combination of live footage and images of rocky, volcanic and cloud-covered landscapes, using psychedelic editing to mirror the track’s shifting textures.

With Obsidian now arriving in full, OVOO present a debut built less around conventional songs than a connected sequence of environments. “II 4:00” reveals where that journey began, with a single repeating idea gradually expanding into the language of an entire record.
