Glasgow indie-pop band The Spook School reunite after an eight-year hiatus with “Falling,” the first look at their forthcoming album, Like A Heartbeat.
After eight years away, Glasgow’s The Spook School are back. The queer indie-pop band have reunited and announced their fourth album, Like A Heartbeat, due January 29, 2027 through Slumberland Records and Alcopop! Records.
The announcement arrives alongside new single “Falling,” marking the band’s first new music since their 2018 album Could It Be Different?, which had previously been presented as their final record.
Formed in 2011, The Spook School built their identity around energetic indie-pop and songs addressing LGBTQ+ experiences, identity and inclusivity. Their return finds the group reconnecting with that purpose at a time when they see queer and trans rights facing renewed pressure around the world.
Recorded with Idlewild guitarist Rod Jones at Post Electric Studio in Leith, Edinburgh, Like A Heartbeat is intended to sound anything but cautious. The band cites Radioactivity, The Beths, Alvvays, Swearin’ and Bad Moves among the influences on its newest material, alongside longtime favorites including Pixies, Pavement, Buzzcocks, Thin Lizzy and The Hives.
Rather than allowing eight years away to soften their sound, guitarist and vocalist Nye Todd says the band deliberately wanted its comeback to feel urgent and energized. That approach feeds into an 11-track record centered on resilience, solidarity and refusing to disappear into the margins.
The Spook School’s returning lineup features Nye Todd on guitar and vocals, Adam Todd on guitar and vocals, Ally “AC” Cory on bass and vocals, and Niall McCamley on drums.
With “Falling” opening the door to their next chapter, Like A Heartbeat turns a reunion into something more purposeful than nostalgia. The Spook School are picking up the ideas that defined their original run while making it clear that eight years away have not reduced their appetite for loud, fast and direct indie-pop.
