New York heavy-alt band MX LONELY confront cycles of violence and the proximity of tragedy on “March 16th,” the first single from their forthcoming EP, PERFECT HOUSE.
New York band MX LONELY have released “March 16th,” featuring Caitlin Starr, as the first preview of their new EP PERFECT HOUSE, due October 2 through Julia’s War Recordings.
“March 16th” pairs the band’s heavy, murky alternative rock with moments of melodic release, exploding into cathartic choruses built around layered vocals from Starr and MX LONELY members Jake Harms and Rae Haas. Its accompanying video, directed by longtime collaborator Owen Lehman, translates that release into an unruly party and black-and-white mosh pit.
The song began as an instrumental during sessions for the band’s debut album, ALL MONSTERS, but ultimately fell outside that record’s world. It returned when Starr visited MX LONELY’s studio to record harmonies and guitar for another track. She developed a vocal hook for the instrumental, with Harms adding a harmony and Haas later contributing a countermelody.
Its lyrics took shape against much darker circumstances. According to the band, the writing session occurred shortly after the December 2025 shooting at Brown University, where a friend of Starr had been caught in the lockdown. The resulting song considers what it means to live close to tragedy while watching violence repeat itself.
PERFECT HOUSE follows ALL MONSTERS, which arrived earlier this year. While that album confronted trauma, addiction, neurodivergence and self-doubt through the metaphor of monsters, the four-song EP moves those struggles inside the home. The band describes the project through the image of a beautiful house that appears intact from the street while complicated emotions threaten to tear it apart from within.
With “March 16th,” MX LONELY introduce that next chapter through a collision of beauty and instability, turning fear and repetition into something loud enough to become communal.
