Brooklyn indie-pop artist Nathalie Miller turns the marks left by time into a tender portrait of new love on her latest single, “teeth filed down.”
Brooklyn indie-pop artist Nathalie Miller has released “teeth filed down,” the first single from her forthcoming debut album i’d like to think you saved me, due November 13.
Built around an unusual romantic image, “teeth filed down” finds Miller considering the life her partner lived before they met. Teeth become a physical record of that history, slowly changing with age and experience, while offering Miller a way to think about loving both the person standing in front of her and the earlier versions of them she never knew.
The song was written during the early stages of a relationship, when Miller found herself learning about experiences that had shaped her new partner. Rather than wishing those difficult moments away, she began considering how even painful experiences contributed to the person she had fallen for.
That idea unfolds through glittery, wistful indie-pop produced by Miller’s longtime collaborator Brian Charles at Rare Signals in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Charles produced, engineered, mixed and mastered the track while also contributing accordion, synth, guitar, drums, piano and bass. Annie Hoffman provided additional engineering.
“teeth filed down” also serves as the opening chapter of i’d like to think you saved me. The upcoming album loosely follows the course of a relationship from beginning to end, with the single capturing its earliest stage: excitement, curiosity and the strange intimacy of discovering another person’s history.
The album follows Miller’s two 2025 EPs, made especially for you and like you used to. While those releases intentionally pushed her songwriting beyond romantic subjects, her new material returns to relationships from a more personal perspective.
With “teeth filed down,” Miller makes that return through a wonderfully specific detail, finding a whole history of love, hurt and survival hiding inside a smile.
