Seattle artist J. Henry has released his debut album Everything is Glowing, featuring the reflective single “Treefort in Boise.” Blending alternative and conscious hip-hop with an accessible pop sensibility, Henry uses the track to examine the strange emotional territory occupied by friendships that remain important long after two people’s lives have drifted apart.
Despite its title, “Treefort in Boise” isn’t really about Treefort Music Fest. Henry wrote the song while attending the Boise festival, but his attention wandered toward memories of a childhood best friend. That train of thought became a musical letter tracing their relationship from its beginnings through the gradual divergence of their adult lives.
Rather than treating that distance as a tragedy, Henry approaches it with gratitude and maturity. The song recognizes that someone can remain foundational to who you are even when they are no longer a regular presence in your life.
