Boston trio Today Junior celebrate the nocturnal escape from workday drudgery on “Werewolves of Boston,” a lively collision of surf-rock bounce and fuzz-punk energy ahead of their new album Stranger Days.
Boston indie-rock trio Today Junior are embracing the creatures of the night with “Werewolves of Boston,” a spirited new single that turns the familiar transition from working hours to after-hours freedom into a fuzzy surf-rock romp.
Made up of brothers Harry and Mike O’Toole alongside bassist Jonathan Hislop, Today Junior have long specialized in energetic, hook-driven rock that sounds particularly at home in crowded clubs. “Werewolves of Boston” takes that instinct directly into the streets and basements of the band’s hometown.
The song centers on the transformation that happens once the obligations of the 9-to-5 disappear and another version of the city emerges. Dive bars, local shows and Allston basement gigs become the natural habitat for people looking to shake off the workday and surrender to something louder, looser and considerably more fun.
That local identity extends to the single’s artwork. The band photographed it in front of the recognizable neon sign at Blanchard’s in Allston, only for the longtime neighborhood liquor store to announce its closure the following day, inadvertently turning the image into a snapshot of a disappearing piece of the neighborhood.
Musically, “Werewolves of Boston” pairs a buoyant surf-rock pulse with the fuzzier indie-punk character Today Junior have developed across releases including Ride The Surf, Leaving Easy and Single Forever. It follows June single “Keep On Pushing Me,” with both tracks offering previews of the band’s next full-length.
That album, Stranger Days, arrives September 4 and continues a prolific stretch for the trio, whose catalog has steadily expanded throughout the 2020s.
With “Werewolves of Boston,” Today Junior offer a compact anthem for clocking out, heading underground and remembering that sometimes the best version of the city only appears after sunset.
