Boston indie alt-pop trio The Ringer Soundtrack tap into a wave of emotional nostalgia with their new single “Voicemail,” released March 20. The breezy, reflective track captures the uneasy mix of hope and frustration that comes with trying to reach someone who never quite answers the call.
Built on disco-leaning basslines, jangly indie guitars, and a panoramic rhythm section, “Voicemail” balances a glossy pop atmosphere with a deeper sense of yearning. The song’s shimmering tone and late-summer-night energy contrast with its central theme: the lingering ache of unreturned messages and unreciprocated connection.
To accompany the release, the band launched a creative hotline where fans can dial 617-652-0506 to hear the song and leave a message of their own. The concept reinforces the single’s central motif — the fragile hope that the next call might finally go through.
Guitarist Brandon Forbes Dalrymple frames the song as a meditation on unreturned connection. The track can be taken literally, he suggests, as the simple act of calling someone and hearing the voicemail tone — or as the persistent sting of love and attention that never quite comes back your way.
The Ringer Soundtrack — Mick Coyne on vocals and piano, Dalrymple on guitars, and Ross Goodwin on bass and production — built the song during an impromptu outdoor writing session last summer. Armed with an acoustic guitar and the warm New England night air, the trio assembled the track quickly around a shared burst of inspiration.
Coyne describes the moment as catching lightning in a bottle, with the band pulling the song almost instinctively from the atmosphere around them. The group later recreated that spontaneous energy in the studio, where Goodwin handled production, mixing, and mastering.
The single also marks a return to the band’s DIY roots. After collaborating with outside producers on recent releases, “Voicemail” brings the creative process back entirely in-house — echoing the approach used on their 2006 debut album Wake Up World, which may see a twentieth-anniversary reissue later this year.
The band’s sound blends influences from multiple eras — weaving together ’80s-style textures, ’90s arrangements, and modern production touches into a style that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. Whether it’s a missed call, a voicemail left after the tone, or the hope that the next ring might be the one that connects, the song captures a small but universal emotional ritual.
