Elizabeth Ziman reflects on care, grief, and modern overwhelm on a new record arriving April 3 via Compass Records.
Brooklyn singer-songwriter Elizabeth Ziman, performing as Elizabeth & the Catapult, has announced her new album Responsible Friend, due April 3 via Compass Records. Alongside the announcement, she released the album’s lead single “50/50,” accompanied by a new music video.
“50/50” explores the strange emotional balance of modern life, where joy and devastation often unfold side by side. Ziman explained that the song took years to complete as new verses continued to emerge, each reflecting a different contradiction — moments of triumph colliding with hardship, hope coexisting with uncertainty. Her goal was to capture that sense of overwhelm without turning the song into a lecture.
The finished track blends reflective lyricism with Elizabeth & the Catapult’s signature indie-pop warmth. Gentle instrumentation supports Ziman’s observant storytelling, creating a sound that feels both intimate and expansive as the song moves through scenes of everyday contradiction.
The album Responsible Friend expands on those themes. Across the record, Ziman reflects on the emotional demands of caring for others while navigating personal grief and exhaustion. The project grew out of her attempt to understand how people process collective hardship in an era where crises and emotional responses often unfold publicly and at a relentless pace.
Many of the songs draw from experiences within Ziman’s own circle, including the loss of a family member and the ongoing struggles of a friend living with long COVID. Through the writing process, she began examining how difficult it can be to remain present for others without becoming consumed by their pain. That tension — wanting to help while recognizing personal limits — runs throughout the album.
Elizabeth & the Catapult will support Responsible Friend with a spring tour across the United States. The run begins April 8 at Joe’s Pub in New York and includes stops in cities such as Philadelphia, Nashville, Los Angeles, Berkeley, and Boston, with additional dates expected.
With “50/50” now out and the full album arriving soon, Ziman offers an early look at a record shaped by empathy, reflection, and the challenge of staying grounded in complicated times.
