The prolific Massachusetts songwriter steps back into the spotlight with a sweeping pop-rock collection of unrequited love songs led by “Brand New Me.”
After decades of writing hits for artists like Taylor Swift, The Beaches, Reba McEntire, and Rascal Flatts, Robert Ellis Orrall is turning the lens back on himself. His new album Wonderland arrives March 27 via Fixation Records, gathering a freshly produced set of songs from his deep personal catalog, along with a reimagined take on “I’m Only Me (When I’m With You),” which he co-wrote with Swift nearly two decades ago.
The album’s lead single, “Brand New Me,” was released February 27 and sets the tone with arena-sized pop-rock energy. The track opens with driving drums and bright electric guitars before settling into a lyric that balances regret, pride, and longing. It’s a bold, melodic entry point into an album centered on unrequited love, where sadness is often wrapped in glossy, upbeat arrangements.
Named after the MBTA Blue Line stop near Orrall’s North Shore home, Wonderland plays like a carefully sequenced mixtape. The title track, arranged with orchestral sweep, introduces the album’s emotional core, but what follows leans into infectious hooks and layered harmonies. Orrall’s signature blend of pop and rock shines through in songs like “I’m Coming With You,” “I Disappear,” and “Carol Ann,” each built around tight vocal stacks and polished instrumentation.
The album reunites Orrall with his original Boston-area bandmates: Kook Lawry on guitar, Don Walden on bass, and David Stefanelli on drums and percussion. Since reforming in 2021, the group has released multiple projects, including the live album The Bear Is The Mountain and last fall’s Wrong Thing. Wonderland fills the space between those releases and an upcoming band album expected later this year.
Alongside the new material, Orrall offers a dramatic reinterpretation of “I’m Only Me (When I’m With You),” shifting the once-upbeat track into a more orchestral and reflective space.
With Wonderland, Orrall highlights a side of his songwriting that has long lived behind the scenes, bringing long-held songs into full focus just in time for spring.
