Portland-based multimedia artist Darci Phenix is set to release her new album, Sable, on March 6 via Get Loud Recordings. The dream folk collection, written over five years, explores the search for a lasting and balanced love. The lead single, “Hummingbird,” is available now.
Phenix’s songwriting is shaped by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The album moves through vivid images of moss-covered trees, rushing water, and snow-dusted woodpiles, grounding its themes of home and permanence in nature. The music pairs these scenes with stark storytelling, pedal steel swells, and textured guitar work. Fans of Allegra Krieger, Hannah Frances, and Haley Heynderickx will find a similar depth in Sable. The album was co-produced by Tejas Leier Heyden (known for work with Madison Cunningham) and mixed and mastered by Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist).
Beyond its sound, Sable reflects the collaborative spirit of Portland’s arts scene. Phenix recorded in unique spaces like an 1800s carriage house and a community studio tucked behind a donut shop. Over 15 local artists contributed to the project, many from outside the music world—including a wallpaper maker and a dove release specialist. A local arts grant helped fund the album’s production, and the vinyl pressing took place just minutes from Phenix’s home. This deep community connection led her to leave Team Love Records after seven years, choosing to release Sable with Portland-based Get Loud Recordings.
Phenix is also bringing her visual art into the project, creating large-scale textile sculptures inspired by her songs. These wool pieces, dyed with local plants, resemble butterflies and reflect themes of transformation. The process, known as rug-tufting, is rooted in traditional fiber arts.
To celebrate Sable, Phenix will perform four songs from the album with a string trio at Laura Vincent Design & Gallery on March 6, where her textile sculptures will be displayed for the month.
Phenix’s work stands out in the dream folk genre for its delicate yet direct approach. She blends intimate storytelling with rich instrumentation, offering an immersive experience that feels both personal and expansive.
