Exploring NJ Woodland Mystique: Painted Fiction & 'Dusk' EP By Brynn Whitman

Northern New Jersey's Painted Fiction finds their muse in the woodlands, crafting their debut EP "Dusk" with an enchanting blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation. Each track invites listeners to unravel its mysteries, with a hybrid of guitars—leaning more towards the acoustic—setting the stage while the bass adds a fluid electric undercurrent.

Throughout "Dusk," Painted Fiction weaves memorable stories, showcasing a melancholic yet not overly ponderous demeanor. Surprisingly, the EP closes with the upbeat "Nameless Horse," its groove and swagger impossible to resist, hinting at the band's diverse range. At moments this has a little bit of a dark country heir about it but with a hint of 90's emo, it's hard to place it precisely. At times it's like a countrified Days Of The New or Alice In Chains unplugged with country roots. There are bits that harken the Johnny Cash 90's cover albums in tone and texture.

The quartet comprising Craig Cirinelli, Brian Leahy, Guy Neighmond, and Mike Flinchum bring their collective experience from bands like Hidden Cabins, Damn This Desert Air, and Eyeswan to create a sound reminiscent of '90s alt-rock, infused with their own unique flair. Throughout it also feels like that background in the punk scene ethos is still there sort of like a Frank Turner or guys like Trevor Keith or Chuck Ragan who went from punk to country.

Painted Fiction's songs feel like intimate conversations around a campfire—sometimes raging, sometimes contemplative. Bold vocals lead the way, supported by non-overbearing drums and a buzzing bass, all woven together with intricate acoustic guitar work.

Meanwhile, Craig Cirinelli's past endeavors, notably with Hidden Cabins, reveal a history of indie-folk excellence. With a knack for emotive storytelling and supported by a solid rhythm section, Hidden Cabins navigates through indie rock, pop, Americana, and more, crafting profoundly emotional compositions. ‘Dusk’ feels like a more mature continuation of the same songwriters journey.

With "Dusk" and "The Hidden Cabins Band EP," both bands prove their prowess in the indie scene, delivering masterful compositions that resonate deeply with listeners. For sure listeners will be drawn to the woodland mystique of Painted Fiction, as this release offer a compelling glimpse into the vibrant music landscape of Northern New Jersey.
