BMN LIVE EXCLUSIVE WITH SONGWRITER SONOFDOV

From post-punk beginnings to melancholy daydreams, New Jersey based singer-songwriter, Dennis King AKA SONOFDOV (pronounced son of dove), writes hauntingly beautiful music. Dennis is often introspective and sticks to themes like innocence lost in most of his music. Recently his single “Carbon and Gold” struck a chord with audiences and he has prepared for you a special exclusive performance here at BloodMakesNoise and we couldn't be happier. Here'a what the artist himself had to say about the recording.

What was the genesis for writing “Carbon and Gold” and its meaning?

For this song I relied on my embarrassing idiosyncratic habit, which is a sudden outburst of sounds or made up songs. No, I’m not walking down the street and start howling, well maybe?  While in the car, I felt my nervous energy build up and I just started singing "Welcome to my city”. The melody was there and it was easy to say. I recorded it on my phone and started to work on it for about a week or two. As far as the meaning, the listener may interpret it one way as did a most recent reviewer who said the song is about “honoring a less superficial existence” or I also see it as the emotional struggles within a person and simply being accepted with all your ugly flaws.

How did you approach the live recording and why at CAKO Studios?

Just before the lockdown I played a show with Lowlight , Derril and Dana were telling me about this amazing idea of buying an old church and turning it into a studio/home. It sounded magical, but the work seemed overwhelming.  Fast forward a couple of years I guess, and this 120 year church in the Lehigh Valley area of PA has become a vibrant recording studio with 20ft ceilings and 1800 square feet of pure inspiration. It's a special place and I had to check it out, plus I’m a big admirer of the band and their overall approach to art and music. Trying to describe it does not give it justice, so I’m thankful that you are sharing this live take, which  gives you a small glimpse into this wonderful space. We set up a couple of mics to capture more of the live room vibe and and I layed down an-alt version of the song. The light that comes through the windows is spiritual and captures the sanctuary's warmth. I’m so thankful for their hospitality and professionalism. It was a fun day and I hope to get back there.

“My streets are overgrown with carbon and gold, starving for mercy, we do as we’re told. Dive into my ocean, the bitter cold, I’ll make you a believer if you sell your soul”.
