Boston indie-folk collective deepen their world ahead of Nothing To The Branches
Boston indie-folk band Jesus The Dinosaur move in the opposite direction of pressure on “Empty Space,” a single that trades tension for release. Where their previous track “Sweet Nothing” leaned into social strain and overstimulation, this one opens a door outward, or inward, depending on how you hear it.
Built around acoustic guitar and soft, layered harmonies, “Empty Space” expands gradually. The arrangement feels light but intentional, giving the song a sense of lift without ever pushing too hard. There’s a quiet confidence in how it unfolds, letting tone and atmosphere carry more weight than structure.
Lyrically, the track centers on retreat. Not as avoidance, but as preservation. Tommy Ng frames the song around a personal internal space, something imagined and revisited over time as a way to manage the noise of the outside world. That idea gives the song its core tension: the place isn’t real, but the need for it is.
That contrast plays directly into the band’s larger arc. With Nothing To The Branches on the way, Jesus The Dinosaur are working in dualities—overstimulation versus solitude, pressure versus ease, external chaos versus internal control. “Empty Space” represents the calm side of that equation.
The band’s full lineup plays a major role in shaping that dynamic. With three guitars, bass, drums, and layered vocals, the arrangements could easily become crowded, but instead they feel carefully spaced. Each part sits with intention, creating movement without clutter.
There’s also a clear DIY ethos running through the track. Recorded across Cambridge and Boston, the production keeps a live, organic feel intact. Even the outro, which drifts into a loose, almost improvised fade, reflects how the band approaches performance—structured enough to hold together, open enough to evolve.
More broadly, Jesus The Dinosaur are positioning themselves as something beyond a solo project. What began as Tommy Ng’s personal outlet has expanded into a fully collaborative unit, with each member shaping the sound in real time.
That shift is central to what’s coming next. Nothing To The Branches isn’t just a collection of songs, it’s a statement of identity. One that folds in themes of gender, relationships, and the broader pressures of existing in the current moment.
“Empty Space” doesn’t try to resolve any of that. It offers a temporary clearing. A place to sit, reset, and step back before re-engaging.
And for a few minutes, that’s enough.
